THE AMERICAN CHIHUAHUA DESERT

The American Chihuahua desert is the most varied desert in the Western Hemisphere. It is located along the borders of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico. The Chihuahua Desert is the biggest and wildest desert in the Western Hemisphere and it covers twenty percent of Mexico and vast area’s of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The area is about 250,000 square miles. It has its own archipelago of more than forty mountain ranges, it was and still is a part of the old west. Names like Geronimo and Poncho Villa lived in this area. If you have a longing for the old West this is the place for you to visit.

The area supports a tremendous amount of wild life! There are mountain lions, ocelots, black bear, kit fox, coyotes, jaguars and migratory birds and hawks. And of course the locale reptiles and birds of pray.

All deserts are not flat, the Chihuahua’s elevations is as varied as its landscape. It goes from 2,584 feet in Tucson to 7,825 feet in Emory Peak. You will see soaring cliffs and canyons in Texas and thick forests in New Mexico, where the desert meets the Rocky Mountains, then the arid brush land of Arizona, truly a great trip for lovers of the old West and nature lovers.

LAKE CHAMPLAIN
Lake Champlain area, a little history of the area, several battles to control Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point were fought here, battles from the Iroquois confederacy to George Washington and the American Revolution, which helped to establish our new country’s military strong hold.

The best views of the area and the state of Vermont can be viewed from the New York side. A must visit to Fort Ticonderoga, built by the French in 1755. You will find a on site museum. At Crown Point you can visit the remains of French and British Forts.

CURAÇAO

Curaçao, an island situated in the southern part of the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Venezuela, one of the islands of the Netherlands Antilles. Curaçao is about 2 1/2 hour flight time from Miami.

Pronunciation: [Kura’são]

Capital: Willemstad

Temperature: +/- 30C or 80F all year round.

Curaçao was discovered in 1499 by a Spanish expedition under the leadership of Alonso de Ojeda. (Alonso accompanied Christopher Columbus in 1493.) In 1634, the Dutch were occupying the island. The island was previously ignored by the colonists because Curaçao lacked what colonists were interested in, such as gold.

On the other hand, Willemstad offered a natural harbor and that’s how it became popular, it was the perfect place for international trading: The Atlantic slave trade. In 1662, Curaçao became the center for slave trade. Slaves from Africa were brought in by the Dutch merchants. The island fell briefly into the hands of the British and the French before the Dutch eventually regained control again. The Dutch abolished slavery in 1863.

The island gained limited self-government within the Kingdom of the Netherlands on Jan-1, 1954 but the political situation is back under discussion since 2000.

The island is on the UNESCO world heritage list.

U.S. and Canadian citizens will need passport and a return ticket. US currency is widely accepted along with most major credit cards. The official language of Curacao is Dutch, but English, Spanish and the local Papiamento is also widely spoken.

The weather is warm and tropical, so light casual clothing is best. The great paradise of Curaçao is located outside the hurricane belt, the island boosts great diving, the water is so clear it has a 100-foot visibility!!

Curaçao has a lot of different religions but it also has the oldest continuous synagogue in use in the Western Hemisphere since 1651.

Curacao also boosts fine beaches, diving, nightlife, casinos, golf and other outdoor activities and last but not least: fine dining.

The RT Program (Registered Traveler Program) is a new program starting June 20, 2006. This program is a great way for those of us who like to speed through airport security.

It is initiated by the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) but now taken over by the private sector. The leading vendor is Verified Identity Pass, Inc., a NY company. Their brand name is called “Clear”. This program is launched at the Orlando International Airport. So far, they have 20,000 people in the Clear program and those people enjoy their own separate express lane with a maximum wait of max. 3 minutes.

Volunteers excepted in this program, received a smart card embedded with biometric information such as fingerprints and iris scan. The annual fee is $79.95

How reliable are those biometrics?
According to the VIP Company, the biometric scanners are 99% accurate. Biometrics can not be duplicated in any way. Your image is now digitally on the smart cart and that image must match your fingerprint and iris scan verified by the operators.

How it works:
The registered traveler will insert their smart card in a scanning device. Then he has to press a finger to the scanner and/or peer into an iris-recognition device. This biometric device will then verify if the identity of the traveler is the same as the person who was issued a smart card

Because pets are easily startle and sometimes confused in a new location, always use a leash.

Last but not least, travel with everything you will need for your pet. E.g. his/her favorite blanket, toys, treats, food (food and water dish), paper towels, a way to scoop and dispose of dog waste.

Snowmobile through the White Mountains National Recreation area, hit the slopes, ride the sled dog teams, view the wild life, etc. Try watching a hockey or basketball game, the game may be played at 10:30 pm under the midnight sun.

You can tour the area by boat or horseback, by raft or by hot air balloon. Excursions are offered both winter and summer, there are always Gray line tours. Staying connected for the modern day business traveler means having access to the internet and more specifically access to Wi-Fi. Fast and easy wireless connections are becoming more common in the places we tend to unwind.

"Is this a good thing or bad thing?" That is a discussion for another day!

Hotels are leading the charge in providing internet connectivity to their guest. Interestedly enough it is the least expensive hotel chains that are providing this service gratis or free!!

Most of the “full service” and luxury brand hotels charge anywhere from $10 to $20 bucks per day. This figure goes up a considerably when you are overseas (not factoring in the exchange rate!).

If free Wi-Fi is a criteria for your next hotel stay check out the hotel that are frequented by business travelers. Not only will you get a decent weekend rate (when us road warriors are not there), but free Wi-Fi access will be readily available.

You have completed your due diligence and planned the perfect vacation for you and your family. The flight went off smoothly and all the activities were as planned. You begin your journey home by dropping off your rental car. Then it hits you like a ton of bricks!

Your rental car bill was more than 50% more than the quoted price. Congratulations, you just helped paying for the new local sports venue!

When renting cars and comparing quotes, make sure you are comparing the TOTAL cost of the rental term. Here are some helpful hints to ease the sticker shock.

Taxes

Make sure you understand all the local taxes and fees. Taxes and fees can increase your rental car bill by 71% according to a study by Travelocity.com.

This means that you will pay for the convenience of picking up your rental car at the airport.

A cab ride to your favorite off airport rental car office may save you enough money for an extra day’s rental.

Watch those frequent flier miles

Most car rental companies add a surcharge for customers that like earning airline miles with their rental car. Utilize the rental companies own incentive program and save yourself some bucks per day on your rental car.

Insurance

Check you personal automobile insurance or call your agent. Most automobile insurance policies cover you when you are renting a car. In addition, check your credit card plans too. If you rent with some credit cards, you can gain additional rental car insurance coverage. Knowledge is the key to saving lots of cash on this topic!

BOOKING AIRLINES EARLY OR LATE

Obviously It depends on your circumstances but both options have their advantages.

The airline has definitely relaxed on many of their advanced purchases but you should still do your homework.

It is predicted that summer travel will be heavier this year, the sooner you have your plans made, the earlier you should book your flight. Let’s face it; getting a great rate to travel to a beach location is going to be a lot tougher then to travel to the Arizona desert in July.

On the other hand, if you do not have firm plans and you are flexible, you may do better to wait to see whether any destination has last-minute sales, because maybe a flight is not quiet full, etc.

Other ways that you may save on your booking, keep an eye on the rate after you have booked your flight. If the fare goes down more than the "re-booking fee", you should go for the lower fare.

Another option for the more flexible travelers:

You could cut your vacation travel by one extra day
You could extend your vacation travel by one extra day
Try a less popular airport: an hour drive could save you money big time.
…

LESSONS FROM OUR ROAD WARRIORS FOR SURVIVING AIRPORT CHECK-IN

We at Travel by North Shore have some well worn travel Road Warriors. Sitting around the water fountain we have captured our top 5 tips for avoiding hassles at the airport.

1. Check-In Online:
Avoiding the log check-in counter will do wonders for setting a positive tone for your trip. If you cannot check-in at home and print your boarding pass, then use the check-in kiosks which are prevalent at most airports. True Road Warriors will know were the check-in kiosk that are off the beaten path are located!

2. Get organized at Home:
Chose your travel attire carefully. Avoid items with large metal objects. Place unnecessary items in your carry-on luggage. Dress for your destination and wear shoes that you can get in and out of quickly. Some more sound advice from our Road Warriors is to check your socks! You will most likely have to take off your shoes while passing through security and you don’t want to be caught in that pair of socks with the hole in the toe.

3. Pack with Knowledge:
If you are not a frequent traveler visit TSA’ website (www.tsa.gov) for the latest do’s and don’ts. Ensure that no restricted items wind up in your luggage or you will be subject to additional “special” screening.

4. Power Up:
Make sure any of your electronic items are fully powered in the event you are asked to power your items up. Laptops and video cameras require separate bins while passing through security screening. Don’t try to shove everything in one bin to pass through the X-ray machine and please check your pockets for metal objects!

5. PPA (Planning, Patience and Attitude):
PPA is our single most important factor for surviving the airport check-in process.

Plan on arriving at the airport early. For casual travelers that means 90-120 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and 120-180 minutes for international flights. This may seem extreme, but while you are relaxing reading a book at the gate the late arrivals are sweating it out in a long security line.

Be patient. Delays are inevitable and totally out of your control. If you cannot control the situation there is no sense is getting all bent of shape! Rolling with the punches is the best way to wait out a delay. Have water, snacks and a good book within reach.

Attitude is #1. I have seen many travelers really lay into the gate agent for a flight cancellation; when in reality the gate agent is the only one that can assist you. Being courteous, respectful and appreciative will get you everywhere! Have your airline’s phone number available and if your flight gets cancelled call the reservation center immediately. They can re-book you just as fast as the gate agent.

ATM/CREDIT CARD FEES WHILE TRAVELING OVERSEAS

TRAVELER BE AWARE !!!

You can be hit with a surcharge for withdrawing cash from a foreign ATM, even if you pay for this service before you leave the United States, your credit card could be charged anywhere from $2.00 to $17.00 per transaction!!! This fee is buried deep in the fine print of credit card agreements.

Some banks call this a “foreign transaction fee”. Well what’s going on is that the banks charge you for currency conversion surcharges every time you withdraw money from a foreign ATM. Unfortunately this also happens when you book your flight on a non U.S. carrier. The same with cruises and Hotels, they all have the same charges. Did you know that your bank does absolutely nothing for this fee? It provides absolutely NO service for the fee that they extract. Visa and MasterCard have already done all the work and your bank card issuer is simply layering another fee on unsuspecting consumers. Not a single bank spokesperson could suggest what service a bank provided for the fee.

Many have suggested using bank ATM cards overseas in order to avoid these fees. BUT unfortunately half of the major banks are now charging their customers the same fees (and in some cases more) whenever they use a debit card overseas. With many major banks, there is no easy escape from the foreign transaction fee.

Added, in many cases, to the indignity of this overseas transaction fee is another additional fee: “the cash advanced fee”. Consumers get hit with this fee, in most cases, whenever they use a credit card to take money from an ATM whether in the USA or overseas.

HOW TO AVOID THESE CHARGES ???

1. Find a bank card that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees.
Capital One credit cards do not charge the foreign transaction fee.
If planning on using your debit card, make sure your bank does not charge a foreign transaction fee. Over half do. Smaller banks, regional banks, credit unions and online banks which issue credit cards often do not charge foreign transaction fees.

2. Avoid expensive ATM/cash advance fees.
Read the fine print before deciding which card to use overseas. If planning to use an ATM card, make sure your bank does not charge overseas transaction fees. With a debit card, online banks (and some smaller banks) often have provisions to refund ATM charges. With a credit card, find a credit union that has a low ATM or cash advance charge. If you have an ATM/check card, know what charges are assessed for using foreign ATMs. Sometimes the ATM fee can be more than a credit card cash advance fee if not used wisely.

3. Ask banks and credit card issuers whether fees are additive.
There is much confusion, even within the banks, about how fees are charged. Ask your bank whether the fees are additive. If so, your real cost for getting money from an ATM overseas will be one percent conversion fee, plus two to three percent bank foreign transaction fee, plus the three percent cash advance fee (or a fixed ATM charge). That can add up to a seven percent, or more, fee to take money from a cash machine overseas. Also, don’t forget that some credit card companies see ‘onboard purchases’ as a foreign transaction if you pay in dollars, you could see a up to 3% fee.

4. Ask your bank card issuer whether their foreign transaction charge includes the Visa/MasterCard currency conversion fee.
Some do. Some don’t.

5. Ask your bank whether they charge foreign transactions fees on cash advances from foreign ATM.
Some do. Some don’t.

6. Ask your bank to waive the ATM fee.
Some will. Some won’t. If your bank won’t, ask around and try to find another bank that will.

7. Look for global alliances that reduce transaction fees.
Some banks are members of international ATM alliances which provide no-fee access to bank card holders when using certain bank machines. Ask your bank if they are a member of such an alliance. Some banks with these alliances do not even charge foreign transaction fees. A good example is Bank of America. They have a no-fee ATM agreement with the following banks: Barclays (United Kingdom), BNP Paribas (France), Deutsche Bank (Germany), Santander Serfin (Mexico), Scotiabank (Canada), Westpac (Australia and New Zealand). Withdrawing money with a Bank of America debit card from one of these banks’ ATMs is fee-free.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST:

Always call your bank for more information before you go on a trip. Don’t be afraid to ask to speak to the supervisor.

When booking on-line, try and pay in dollars. This basically means that you make your reservation in the US or by calling the US office.

Refuse to let foreign vendors charge your card in US dollars. You will not get a desirable exchange rate.

If you are planning to travel to Mexico or the Caribbean, take a cruise or a ski trip to the Canadian Rockies, the following changes might be really interesting for you to read up on.
Destinations that now only require a driver’s license or birth certificate will now need a more universal document. As of December 31 2006, Americans will need a passport for all air and sea travel to and from Mexico, Canada, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

Ship staffers who specialize in tours can arrange shore excursions for a fee

How should I secure my home when I go on vacation?

Do not leave keys outside your home
Have newspaper, mail and other deliveries stopped
Turn lights on and off with the use of a timer
Do not leave messages on your door or phone that indicates your not home
Keep the front part of the house well lit
Trim your shrubs and bushes so burglars don’t have a place to hide
Don’t forget to close and lock all doors and windows
Lock and store all tools and yard equipment in the garage or shed

SAN FRANCISCO

Do you know another great way to see the San Francisco Bay area: “San Francisco at Sunset”. We all know San Francisco has great restaurants and night spots and I would like to share 5 great outdoor spots to keep you fit even when the sun goes down.

Point Bonita Light:
The interpretive walk led by a National Park Ranger begins a half-hour before sunset and offers a spectacular view of the Bay and Pacific ocean.

The next location I had in mind is the Two Twin Peaks:
It is one of the highest point in San Francisco. This is a self guided tour but the view is tremendous and is located in the center of the city.

How about stepping into a kayak:
Sea Trek offers three-hour tours. If you like the quite sound of the water after the wind dies down, watch the wild life come out and listen to the occasional bark from the seals, this tour is for you!

Another great location that I had in mind can only be taken a few day’s during the year. (from November through February.) It is Fort Point Civil War Era Fort underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. Your guide will be a Fort Point Ranger and he will show you great views and history.

Last but not least..., how about a bike ride through San Francisco.
